District Line delays on eastern section after trespasser at Barking

The District Line experienced severe delays between Whitechapel and Upminster on Friday afternoon following a trespasser on the track at Barking. The disruption affected the eastern section of the line only; services on the rest of the District Line were running normally at the time. During the disruption, TfL advised that tickets were being accepted on London Buses and on c2c services, giving affected passengers alternative ways to complete their journeys along that corridor.

While Chiswick sits on the western branches of the District Line — served by the Richmond and Ealing Broadway branches, both of which were unaffected — residents travelling into central London and onward east will have felt the knock-on effects during the busy Friday rush hour. Delays on one section of a busy interchange line like the District can cause congestion to spread westward through stations such as Earl's Court and Victoria.
